Mounting financial diffculties lead to quitting Argentueil after six years. Unable to pay all rent due, Monet leaves his ambitious 'Déjeuner sur l'Herbe' as surety.

March

Michel is born. Another financial burden at the worst time. Regardless of this Monet maintains a six-room apartment and studio.

No Impressionist Exhibition is held.

May

Théodore Duret publishes the book in praise of Impression, 'Les Peintures Impressionistes', which sows the seeds of Monet's 'image'.

June 30th

First National day held since the end of the Franco-Prussian War; Monet famously 'requisitioned' a balcony on the Ruse Montorgueil to paint the scene.

Moves to Vétheuil (but still maintains the studio in Paris).

Hoschedé's collection is auctioned, depressing the price for Impressionist works.

The Hoschedé family - his wife, Alice, and their six children - move in with the Monets at Vétheuil.

v

Monet paints furiously (and not always particularly well), producing 2 canvases per week.
