Death of Jean Monet. Blanche Hoschedé, Jean's widow and Monet's step-daughter, moves into the house in Givenry to take care of Monet.

Possibly because Blanche is now filling some of the void left by Alice's death, Monet rediscovers his appetite for work.

March

Durand-Ruel mounts a retrospective exhibition of 50 works by Monet in Paris.

April

Announces his intention to paint large-scale decorative paintings (Les Grandes Décorations), including some for presentation to the State.

Summer

Begins to work on the large-scale paintings (2m or more in width).

August
